Medical spa can help with a wide range of conditions from rheumatism, disc prolapse, to circulatory and nervous system problems. Our European Spa is developed to help visitors relax, rejuvenate and improve their health. Balneology ‘Balneology’ (treatments based on thermal hot springs, mineral water or mud) is considered a field of medicine in its own right and we use Balneology principles to help cure health problems such as arthritis, psoriasis, rheumatism, infertility, digestive, metabolic and skin disorders using mud or peat, seawater gases and oxygen ozone mixtures. Water of Europe’s mineral springs offered to visitors in Wiser Hall have large quantities of carbon dioxide which is used in the preparation of the carbon bath where kidney, urinary and the respiratory tract problems are treated, as well as obesity and nervous disorders. Mineral spring waters are especially good for curing intestinal and digestive problems, diabetes, gout and allergies. The baths also help regain vigour and boost the immune system and it is believed in many cases that bathing cures have an enormous advantage over drugs and surgery. There are a wide variety of treatments available. Our guide to spa treatments explains what the treatment consists of and what it is used for: Algae therapy What is it? The ocean is full of rich vitamins, minerals and trace elements and sea algae absorb high concentrations of these elements. Algae therapy uses specially prepared marine algae, which is rich in nutrients, mineral ingredients and trace elements to help the body function at its optimum. Algae packs are often used as part of the Thalassotherapy regimen. How does it work? A warm compress is made from a mix of algae and then placed on the body for a short while to absorb. What does it treat? Algae has excellent moisturising and toning properties and is a superb skin and detoxing treatment as the high mineral concentrations are very regenerative and some algae have anti-bacterial properties. Algae is also beneficial for the treatment of cellulite, reducing toxins, increasing metabolism and improving skin appearance. Also beneficial for the treatment of rheumatism. Carbon bath What is it? A carbon bath is mineral water saturated with carbon dioxide, with a water temperature of around 35 degrees Celsius. How does it work? The bath is saturated with carbon dioxide gas covering the guest’s body in thousands of tiny bubbles, with the head out of the bath and protected from the carbon. During the bath carbon bubbles are generated on the skin to create a sort of gas film. The gas is strongly diffused and absorbed to help reduce blood pressure, improve heart action efficiency and greatly improve the congestion in the body. What does it treat? The carbon bath helps to improve heart activity, reduces blood pressure and heart strain. It is also a very good treatment for general relaxation. Cryotherapy What is it? In spa terminology Cryotherapy means the application of a very cold or frozen compress to treat muscles and joints which are sore or fatigued after physical exertion (not be confused with the radiologic-based cryotherapy technique which is used in the treatment of cancer). Historically, and until artificial packs were created, Cryotherapy was only available in countries with plenty of snow and ice. How does it work? As a spa treatment the stimulating effect of extremely low temperatures is achieved using liquid nitrogen which causes a defensive reaction on the body. After two to three minutes the compress gives a painkilling, swelling reducing and anti inflammatory result. What does it treat? It is beneficial for osteoporosis, rheumatism, back pain, and cellulite. Ice packs help reduce fevers, treat the pain of arthritis, gout and control infections. Diathermy What is it? Diathermy is a deep tissue heat treatment. How does it work? The temperature of the injured tissues is raised by a high frequency current and deep heat speeds up healing by increasing blood flow to the injury/pain. What does it treat? Diathermy is beneficial in the treatment of chronic arthritis, bursitis, fractures, gynaecologic diseases and helps reduce pain, relieve muscle spasm, decrease soft-tissue contractures, resolve inflammation and promote healing. Diathermy is also used to remove skin tags, warts and moles and is a successful method for removing thread veins by cauterising capillaries and small veins that are engorged with blood. Electrotherapy What is it? Electrical equipment is frequently used in traditional and experimental medical therapy. In the electrotherapy treatment weak electrical impulses stimulate tissues to improve blood circulation and relieve pain. How does it work? Electrotherapy uses different types of electric currents to improve blood circulation in tissues, loosen tension and smooth muscles. What does it treat? Electrotherapy is used for treating disorders of the locomotive system, blood circulation disorders, chronic inflammatory and degenerative disorders, post-operation conditions and chronic gynaecological problems. It can also have analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Endermology What is it? Endermology is a non invasive treatment which successfully reduces the appearance of Cellulite (puckering and dimpling of the skin) by massage, rolling and manipulation of the tissues. How does it work? As trapped excess fluids are liberated, the interface layer between the dermis and hypodermis becomes smooth and the dimpled appearance is eradicated. Controlled suction gently lifts and rolls the skin to deeply massage the affected areas while toxins and fluid retention build-up is expelled as connective fibres are stretched and restored and skin becomes smooth. What does it treat? The combination of mechanical massages improves blood and lymph circulation, eliminates toxins, and reduces the volume of deep fat deposits to eventually reduce the “orange peel” effect. Originally, Emdermology was used to treat burns and loosen scar tissue. Hot pebble massage What is it? The hot pebble massage is a highly relaxing, deep tissue massage using specific, heat conductive massage pebbles which are heated before treatment. How does it work? The masseur moves the stones across the body to unblock energy flow. What does it treat? This type of massage is ideal for specific injured muscles and is considered to be even more effective than traditional hand massage as muscle knots can be smoothed out more easily and less painfully. Hydrotherapy What is it? Hydrotherapy is another term for Balneotherapy and incorporates water treatments such as underwater massages, hot and cold showers, mineral baths and jet sprays to maintain health, prevent disease and assists in the healing process of almost any ailment. How does it work? The therapy is one of the oldest methods known to man and Sebastian Kneipp (1821-97) believed that water would dissolve matter-containing disease, remove diseased matter from the body and strengthen the body by restoring cleansed blood to the tissues and maximizing circulation, which is why treatments are frequently called ‘Kneipp Baths’. What does it treat? Externally water can improve blood and lymph circulation, relax tension in the tissues, alleviate pain and calm the nervous system. Hydromassage What is it? Hydromassage is a hot bath, with a water temperature at 35 degrees Celsius. How does it work? The soft massaging effect of the warm water has a relaxing and healing effect on muscles and joints. What does it treat? Hydromassage is an excellent treatment for blood circulation and to promote a general feeling of relaxation and well being. Inhalation therapy What is it? The inhalation of curing vapours of mineral waters, diluted medications or their aerosols from an inhaler or inhaling the steam of a boiling liquid is an effective treatment for acute or chronic bronchitis and asthma. How does it work? There are two common types; oxygen or salt inhalations. The oxygen inhalation helps increase the oxygen supply to the cells to improve immunity while enriched steam or aromatherapy is used for treating upper or lower respiratory tract problems. Natural salts are used for the salt inhalation, in combination with mineral water to improve the function of the mucous membrane of the breathing apparatus. What does it treat? Inhalation therapy is an effective treatment for acute or chronic bronchitis and asthma. Light therapy & Heliotherapy What is it? Light has an extremely positive effect on the skin and body, and light therapy uses light either from natural (heliotherapy) or artificial sources (actinotherapy) to treat various ailments, as well as depressive and sleep disorders. How does it work? The light travelling through the epidermis can affect cell bio-chemistry in the skin which in turn can affect the enzyme reaction rate, tissue repair, cell regeneration, the speeding up of blood flow and the increase of oxygen supply. This is a very relaxing, soothing and non-invasive treatment. What does it treat? Heliotherapy exposes the body to sunlight to help heal disease and is beneficial for increasing energy, lowering blood pressure, lowering blood cholesterol and increasing resistance to infection. Dermatologists use heliotherapy for the treatment of acne, psoriasis and other skin problems and while natural solar radiation is the preferred method artificial light may also be used. As a chiropractic treatment, heliotherapy is used for muscular stimulation and relaxation and can help with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) caused by sunlight deprivation during the dark winter months. Magnetotherapy What is it? Magnetotherapy is a gentle, safe, non-invasive and natural therapy for the treatment of acute or chronic diseases, and an effective method for removing pain, inflammation and swelling. How does it work? The therapy consists of introducing areas of the body into a magnetic field to accelerate the recovery of pain. A pulsating magnetic field (PMF) works at the cellular level on tissues of the body to cause activation of enzymatic processes, metabolic transfers and cellular membrane functions to accelerate regeneration processes such as the healing of wounds and fractures. What does it treat? It is used to treat the symptoms of epilepsy, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, migraine, severe PMS, ADHD and depression. Massage What is it? Spas offer a broad selection of massages from medical massages to relaxation massages. How does it work? Massage involves kneading, rubbing, stroking or tapping the body in a planned and controlled way for a relaxing and activating effect on the tissues and muscles. Qualified masseurs apply different forms of massage for individual problems and therapies. What does it treat? Massage invigorates the blood supply, restores the skin and lymphatic functions, improves circulation, increases tissue elasticity, relaxes tense muscles and increases the depth of breathing. A medical massage targets areas of disease with the aim of speeding up the recovery process and improving circulation to problematic areas. A Deep-tissue massage focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue to get right into the aches and pains and release tensions, a reflexive massage and lymphatic massage assists in the process of strength regeneration and fatigue relief by circulating blood and the lymph and increasing joint mobility, while an under water massage uses the pressure water jets to relax the muscles and increase blood and lymph flow. Medicinal Water Bathing What is it? Medicinal water is mineral water with healing properties - and thorough tests are undertaken to certify that water is ‘medicinal’. Rich in minerals and warmed by the heat of the earth's interior thermal spring water is probably the most important natural remedy known to mankind. How does it work? Relaxing in thermal water is the perfect way to release the stresses and strains of modern life. Medicinal Dips (where patients dip limbs into the water) can be performed where full bathing is not permitted for medical reasons. What does it treat? Active compounds in the water penetrate the skin for both local and general benefits on the body. Mud treatments What is it? Mud treatments range from peat and mud packs, mud baths, peloid packs and paraffin packs. How does it work? The body is covered in a mud pack at a set temperature and thickness to deeply warm the body and allow anti-inflammatory, regenerating and anti-bacterial benefits to take effect. What does it treat? These are particularly beneficial for rheumatic complaints as the effect of the hot mud is extremely relaxing to the muscles and improves blood circulation. A bag of warm peat moss might be applied to a particular place on the body and when the heat transfers it provides a soothing, pain relieving effect. A peloid wrap (heated peat moss) might be mixed with thermal water and applied to the affected part - this is especially good for chronic illnesses of the digestive tract and for the treatment of gout. Oxygen therapy What is it? Oxygen therapy stimulates detoxification of the body. Harmful bacteria, viruses and fungi such as colds, flu or candida albicans thrive in low oxygen environments so if the body has a rich supply of oxygen it can resist these infections and maintain good health. Health experts believe that lack of oxygen is the fundamental cause of degenerative disease. How does it work? Oxygen therapy takes place either by the ozone or hydrogen peroxide method. Oxygen can be administered via oral administration (inhalation), or by forcing oxygen through a metal tube carrying a 300 volt charge, taking a pint of blood from the patient and placing this in an infusion bottle then forcing ozone back into the bottle to destroy viruses and disease organisms, before returning the treated blood to the patient. Alternatively, the therapy can be administered by injecting Hydrogen Peroxide (which has strong oxidising properties) directly into the blood stream, or via inhalation. What does it treat? Oxygen therapy stimulates the immune system and helps treat imbalances of the body from allergies, asthma, colds and flu to more serious bacterial infections and cancer. The therapy changes the body’s chemistry to help it overcome disease, has a relaxing effect on the patient and improves the quality of life. Paraffin poultices What is it? Poultices are used to heal bruises and sores, soothe abrasions and release toxins and can be applied hot or cold. How does it work? Cold poultices are used to withdraw heat from an inflamed or congested area while hot poultices help relax spasms and pain. The paraffin poultice is a thermal treatment using paraffin heated to 40-50 degrees Celsius to increase blood supply to the area being treated. What does it treat? Paraffin creates a mini sauna, trapping heat to a particular area. The paraffin poultice increases local blood circulation and eliminates toxins. This is a good treatment for sciatica, back disorders, rheumatism and sports injury. Pearl Baths What is it? The client is immersed in a tub of spring or thermal water fitted with air nozzles. How does it work? Air is pumped under pressure into the bathtub with special emulsions added to the water to increase painkilling, relaxing and soothing properties What does it treat? The bubbles gently massage the body sending signals to nerve endings to eliminate fatigue and stress. Peloidotherapy What is it? Peloidotherapy involves dissolving highly mineralised, purified therapeutic mud or peat in water and applying to the body as a thermal therapy. The fresh mud comprises decomposed aquatic plants. How does it work? The spa physician will decide whether to give the patient a full or partial mud pack to be placed directly on to the skin at around 40 degrees Celsius. The effect of the hot mud is extremely relaxing to the muscles, reducing local swellings around joints, muscle tension and strengthening anti-inflammatory activity and immune processes within the body. Peat is used in a form of wraps for locomotive system disorders, gynaecological disorders and respiratory tract disorders. What does it treat? Peloidotherapy is used to treat rheumatism, inflammation, neuralgia and obesity. The heat improves the blood circulation rate and the local metabolism. This therapy also helps to eliminate cellulite and stretch marks. Phototherapy What is it? Phototherapy is also known as light therapy and involves exposure to light from a box of white fluorescent light tubes covered with a plastic screen to block ultraviolet rays. How does it work? Light has an extremely positive effect on the skin and body and light therapy uses light either from natural (heliotherapy) or artificial sources (actinotherapy) to treat various ailments, as well as depressive and sleep disorders. The light travelling through the epidermis can affect cell bio-chemistry in the skin which in turn can affect the enzyme reaction rate, tissue repair, cell regeneration, the speeding up of blood flow and the increase of oxygen supply. What does it treat? Phototherapy can be used to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) caused by sunlight deprivation during the dark winter months and the infra-red and UV radiation treatment is used for muscular stimulation and relaxation. Light therapy can be used to target pain and applied to cases of neuralgia and inflammations of the ears and nose. Power showers What is it? The invigorating effects of a power shower can be taken to the deepest level within the spa environment as clients can experience a circulatory boosting shower blast of varying pressure and temperature to help increase the immune system, and provide a rejuvenating and calming effect on the skin and body. How does it work? The treatment usually involves dousing with alternate hot and cold water blasts. What does it treat? The variation of the hot and cold blasts helps toughen the body, tones the muscles and speeds up metabolism. Salt Cave What is it? The Salt cave is an enclosed healing place which is very beneficial for people suffering from respiratory problems. Built from natural blocks of sea salt the whole interior is designed in the style of a cave. How does it work? Inside, the air is very pure and is saturated with therapeutic sodium chloride, magnesium and calcium ions which provide excellent effects for treatment of respiratory disorders, asthma, inflammations of the nasal cavities and allergies of respiratory system of adults as well as children. The environment is very conducive for relaxation. What does it treat? As well as relieving respiratory disorders, the bacteria-free environment is good for helping digestive diseases such as Crohn’s and assists with dermatological diseases such as psoriasis or allergies. The salt cave is also a good antidote to stress and exhaustion and the selenium contained in the salt is very beneficial for slowing down the ageing process. Thalassotherapy What is it? Thalassotherapy is the therapeutic use of water and marine by-products that are rich in minerals and vitamins to restore balance to the body and involves an integrated plan for therapy, prevention and health promotion. How does it work? Treatment is implemented under medical care and is offered where the climate has an immediate effect and can be used for bathing in natural waters. The pores of the skin expand to allow the passage of precious minerals from the water into the blood system and treatments provide relaxation, help fight stress, slow down the physical signs of ageing, reduce the appearance of cellulite and regenerate the body. Treatment usually includes the use of mud or algae in different applications. What does it treat? Thalassotherapy is used for the medical treatment of chronic illnesses such as respiratory or skin diseases as well as prophylaxis in healthy individuals. Thalassotherapy is believed to be beneficial for circulatory diseases, respiratory diseases, post traumatic disorders, skin problems such as atopic dermatitis and chronic inflammation such as rheumatic arthritis. Various types of seaweed have antibiotic, antibacterial and antiviral powers, which boosts the effectiveness of the immune system and improves quality of sleep. Thermotherapy What is it? Thermotherapy is a medical therapy involving the application of heat to treat a disease or disorder. How does it work? Heated pads, hot compresses or hot-water bottles are used to promote circulation in peripheral vascular disease or to relax tense muscles. What does it treat? Thermotherapy is also used to expose body tissue to high temperatures to damage and kill cancer cells or to make cancer cells more sensitive to the effects of radiation. Whirlpool massage What is it? A whirlpool massage is a massage for the upper and lower limbs. How does it work? Whirling warm water massages the body to reduce swelling and relax muscles as well as stimulate the circulation in the peripheral vessels. What does it treat? This is especially helpful for chronic inflammatory and degenerative afflictions of the vertebrae and joints, circulatory diseases, and psychological relaxation. |
